The black part is the block, the gold thing is the safety. On the left side, the block is in the way of the firing pin moving forward. On the right side, the block is pushed up, exposing the cutout, and allowing the firing pin to move forward. Eventually you'll take it apart to see for yourself. Firing pin channels need to be cleaned periodically.

I live in Texas, it’s been over 100 degrees everyday for over a week. I was at my LGS today, saw a used Micro 9 and decided to upgrade my pocket carry gun. The Micro 9 came as just the gun and one magazine, no box, etc. Because of that I think I got a good deal, the gun is very clean. I have ordered a flush magazine and a Sticky holster.I can't remember if it was on this forum or another that gave me the idea, but another solution for the infamous magazine drop problem was the replace the M9 magazine release spring with a 1911 mag release spring.
