The drive takes not quite an hour. 89A takes you thru the Kaibab Forest and past the turn to the North Rim Grand Canyon. However, in mid October, there's the possibility of snow on that route. The North Rim closes on October 15. Driving southbound, this section of 89A descends a couple thousand feet in elevation via about two miles of switchbacks. Then you are basically driving on the floor of the canyon beside the creek. The road is fairly narrow with rocky walls and sometimes trees close by.
